UN Calls For More, Better Trained Midwives

The United Nations says more and better trained midwives could help save millions of lives in many countries with high death rates among newborns and women giving birth

Vincent Fauveau, who coordinated a new UN study of midwife services in 58 countries around the world, said Monday that midwives “can do much more than deliver babies They can deliver health services”

The study and new recommendations for training and licensing midwives were released at an international midwives conference in the coastal South African city of Durban Monday

The study’s recommendations were endorsed by dozens of aid, development and educational institutions, including USAID, Save the Children and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

When warming up for the cycling race, less is more

In a study comparing the effects of a traditional, intense warm-up with those of a shorter, less strenuous warm-up on the performance of 10 highly trained track cyclists, the researchers found that the shorter warm-up produced less muscle fatigue yet more peak power output. The findings are published in the Journal of Applied Physiology. The study was conducted by Elias K. Tomaras and Brian R. MacIntosh.

The intensity of traditional, longer warm-ups has been thought to offer competitive athletes an edge by promoting a process called post-activation potentiation (PAP).
