Four sisters are starting a 5K “They Can’t Stop Me” run/walk in memory of their father, Jerry Barsha who died last year at the age of 83. It takes place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 along the Erie Canal in DeWitt.
Register for $25 online by 8 p.m. Sept. 24 at www.theycantstopme.org, or on race day from 6:45 to 8:15 a.m. behind the DeWitt Town Clerk’s Office at 5400 Butternut Road. Those who raise $100 for the Jerry Barsha Memorial Foundation will receive a cap.
Debra Barsha, of Somers, will walk with her mother, Martha, Jerry’s wife of 51 years.

An infectious-disease nightmare is unfolding: Bacteria that have been made resistant to nearly all antibiotics by an alarming new gene have sickened people in three states and are popping up all over the world, health officials reported Monday.
The U.S. cases and two others in Canada all involve people who had recently received medical care in India, where the problem is widespread. A British medical journal revealed the risk last month in an article describing dozens of cases in Britain in people who had gone to India for medical procedures.
How many deaths the gene may have caused is unknown; there is no central tracking of such cases. Full Post…

WASHINGTON Antibiotics can temporarily upset your stomach, but now it turns out that repeatedly taking them can trigger long-lasting changes in all those good germs that live in your gut, raising questions about lingering ill effects.
Nobody yet knows if that leads to later health problems. But the finding is the latest in a flurry of research raising questions about how the customized bacterial zoo that thrives in our intestines forms – and whether the wrong type or amount plays a role in ailments from obesity to inflammatory bowel disease to asthma.

Dr. Manoj Vora, the Lowville doctor who attempted to climb Mount Everest earlier this year, presents video and talks about his adventure as part of the village’s sixth annual Cream Cheese Festival on Saturday, Sept. 18.
His presentation takes place at 2 p.m. in the Lowville Town Hall Theater, 5428 Shady Ave.
Vora told The Post-Standard about his expedition for a story in May.
He shared many photos of his journey.
Upon his return to Lowville, he explained in another newspaper story why he turned back just before reaching the summit.
