The infectious dance music by Reel 2 Real spills into the atrium of the Outpatient Plaza at MetroHealth Medical Center. France Records First E. coli Death

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Authorities have recorded the first death in France’s E coli outbreak

Dr Benoit Vendrely at Bordeaux Hospital in southwest France said the 78-year-old woman died early Saturday morning

She had been hospitalized in Bordeaux since June 24 with hemolytic uremic syndrome – the rare kidney condition that the most seriously ill victims of the outbreak are suffering from

Vendrely said the strain of Ecoli the woman was infected with was not the one implicated in the deaths of 48 people in Germany and one each in the United States and Sweden He didn’t identify the source of the French woman’s E coli contamination

Seven other patients remain at the same French hospital, six of whom have been confirmed to have the same strain of Ecoli as in the outbreak that originated in Germany European health experts said Thursday that contaminated Egyptian fenugreek seeds were likely the source of that deadly outbreak

Flame-Retardant Chemicals Common in Offices

Friday, July 1st, 2011

(June 30, 2011) — Hand washing at work doesn’t just keep germs at bay. A new study shows that office workers who frequently lather up have lower levels of hormone-disrupting flame-retardant chemicals on their hands and in their blood.

The study tested for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in 31 Boston-area offices and found the chemicals, which are used to keep everything from office chairs to carpeting to computers from catching fire, in every work space tested.

Additionally, researchers swabbed the hands of office workers and took blood samples to check for the presence of PBDEs.

Workers who washed their hands at least four times daily had lower levels of PBDEs on their skin, and their blood levels of some kinds of PBDEs were more than three times lower than workers who washed their hands less frequently.

Studies in animals and people suggest that exposure to PBDEs may affect the thyroid and brain.

Adult swim coming to Baltimore City pools

Friday, July 1st, 2011

The Baltimore City Recreation & Parks Department is trying out something for summer – adult swim.

This is planned for large pools around the city. The pool at Riverside Park in South Baltimore, for example, will open from 5 p.m.- 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Here’s the full schedule for city pools.

If enough people show up, 25-30, they’ll keep it up. They have to pay for staff and justify keeping all those kids out.

You must be 18 years or older. But this isn’t the tiki bar. No glass, no alcohol cans or bottle allowed.
