NIAID News Release: Media Availability: Weakened Malaria Parasites Form Basis of New Vaccine Strategy

WHAT: Using live but weakened malaria parasites as the basis of a vaccine represents a potentially encouraging anti-malaria strategy, according to results of follow-up animal studies performed after the conclusion of a recent clinical trial in humans. The research was conducted by scientists at the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, working in concert with a large team of collaborators. The findings were published online September 8 in Science Express.

The parasite that causes malaria, a disease that kills nearly one million people each year, is transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected mosquito.

Kaiser to unveil 217-bed tower in south Sacramento today

The final piece of Kaiser Permanente’s five-year, $300 million expansion of its south Sacramento Medical Center the hospital’s five-story South Tower opens today.

The 158,000-square-foot tower wraps up a massive project that added outpatient surgery services, new medical offices, a helipad and the Sacramento area’s fourth trauma center to the Bruceville Road campus.

The new facility, with its focus on intensive care for critically ill patients, links to the trauma services Kaiser fought hard to win at the beginning of the hospital’s expansion.

Sacramento County supervisors in 2007 narrowly granted Kaiser the south area’s first trauma center by a 3-2 vote.

Measuring the Affordability of Employer Health Coverage

A recent draft regulation issued by the Treasury Department describes who is eligible for premium tax credits to help them afford coverage offered through health insurance exchanges beginning in 2014. The approach that the regulation proposes for measuring the affordability of employer coverage could have significant financial consequences for a modest number of lower- and middle-income families.

Starting in 2014, the health reform law generally requires people to have health insurance and provides tax credits to help them afford it.
